The Gardener and the Bear
(A folk tale from Persia)
Once upon a time in the East Persia, there lived a lonely gardener. He had no wife, no children, and no friends. What he had was just a garden of flowers and fruits. One day he decided to go out into the world and find a friend. Scarcely was he outside the garden, he met a bear. The bear had no family, no children, and no friends either, and just like the gardener he was looking for a companion. Immediately they became friends.
The gardener invited the bear to come into his garden, and fed him on fruits he harvested. In return for this kindness, when the gardener lay down to take his afternoon nap, the bear stood by and drove off the flies.
One morning there was unusually large fly on the gardener’s nose. The bear drove it off, but it only flew to the gardener's chin. Again the bear drove it away, but it flew back to the gardener's nose. The bear was very mad. He furiously took a huge stone and smashed it to the fly. Not only had he killed the fly, but he also inconsiderably killed the sleeping gardener.
It is better to have a wise enemy than a foolish friend.
